The History of Camp Tuscaloosa
"Coach" Vincent DeLaurentis and his wife, school nurse Marie DeLaurentis, opened Camp Tuscaloosa in 1954 at Hammonton Lake Park while acting as the caretakers. Coach, a physical education teacher, named the camp Tuscaloosa after the hometown of his alma mater, the University of Alabama.
In 1981, the camp relocated to its current facilities on Chew Rd., where it has been open every summer since. Following in her parents’ footsteps, Dina DeLaurentis Moorhead and her husband John have continued the Camp Tuscaloosa legacy, along with R.E.A.D. Preschool, for the past 28 years. Many of the residents of Hammonton and the surrounding area have enjoyed making friends and memories throughout their childhood summers at Camp Tuscaloosa. Whether your child wants to swim, play 4-Square Fogball with friends, or create crafts, Camp Tuscaloosa provides a safe and caring atmosphere for all children.
What makes us unique is the enduring and extended legacy of our camp community. Many children spend every summer together from age 3 through 14. Several of our qualified and dedicated staff were once former campers that have since developed a love for education and become teachers themselves. Parents can bring their children to Camp Tuscaloosa with peace of mind. All of the children are treated with kindness and respect, and are sure to create their own happiest memories of summers spent at Camp Tuscaloosa.
